FAQ

1. How often should I change my air filter?
Questions about filters are one of the most important as it relates to the maintenance of your system. Proper air filtration is just as important to the health of your heating and cooling system as it is to the health of your family. Without proper filtration, dust and dirt can build up on your system, which impacts operation and efficiency. A clean filter will remove more dust, dirt, pollen, mold, and other particles from the air. Dirty air filters reduce the amount of air flowing through a system and make the AC System work harder to maintain the temperature. Frisco AC recommends checking your filter at least every 30 days and based on the items discussed changing your filter every 45 days. What ever you do change your filter on a regular cycle. If you have any questions please call Frisco Air Conditioning Company a call and we can give you proper guidance.

2. Why should I purchase a service agreement?
If Frisco AC is installing a new unit you will have that company (Brand of AC) warranty for normally 1 year after purchase. A breakdown after the initial Factory Warranty can mean significant expense in parts, labor, or both. If you are looking for service for an older system and do not have a good “Service Agreement”. Now is the time to ask us about one of our Frisco AC Service Agreements, so in the future you could possibly avoid those unexpected expenses. While no service agreement can guard against every possible problem, we can explain the broad range of protection our different levels of service agreements provide.

3. At what temperature should I set my thermostat?
Normal cooling settings are 75 degrees – 80 degrees. You should always set your thermostat to the highest possible setting that is comfortable for you in the summer, and the lowest comfortable setting in the winter. Setting your thermostat in this way will maximize your energy savings. On average, every 1-degree of temperature change is equal to about 6% in energy savings. For example, if your current energy cost were $250 a month and you made a permanent change in your thermostat setting from 75 degrees to 77 degrees for the summer this could result in about 12% savings and approximately a $30 a month saving on your energy cost.

4. Is using ceiling fans and the air conditioner at the same time cost efficient or a waste of energy?
Using ceiling fans at the same time as your AC is definitely not a waste of energy. Ceiling fans use very little electricity. Use them to circulate air in the house, to make the house feel cooler. By doing this, the thermostat setting for your air conditioner can be raised as high as 85°F, and still maintain the same comfort as the lower setting.

5. What is a ‘SEER” rating?
Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) — A measure of seasonal or annual efficiency of a central air conditioner or air conditioning heat pump. It takes into account the variations in temperature that can occur within a season and is the average number of BTU’s of cooling delivered for every watt-hour of electricity used by the heat pump over a cooling season. Higher the SEER rating the lower it would cost to use.

6. How do you change an AC filter?
The filter is easy to change. It should be in one or two places, the return grill, which will be in a hallway near the thermostat. This is the most common location if your furnace is located someplace not easily gotten to. The return grill should have small latches or screws/nuts keeping it closed, the grill is hinged to allow it to swing open for easy filter changes. Simply remove old filter check the size that’s written on it and replace with same size assuming it fit right.

7. What is the most important thing to consider when buying a new air conditioner?
The Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating (SEER) rating. The higher the number, the better, and the less electricity it uses.
